After a gruesome winter season, we all want to go outside and soak up the sun. But prolonged exposure to the sun can cause damage to the outer surface of the skin. I live in the East Coast and I experience all four seasons (winter, spring, summer, and fall). Without noticing, I realize that my skin goes through changes during a hot day too. In this article, I bring you helpful tips on keeping your skin healthy and fresh during the summer season.
The sun plays a key role in the health of your skin. It can help you in the production of Vitamin D and boosts your overall mood. However, significant exposure to the sun can make your skin dull, oily and also dry. To avoid this, many of us apply sunscreen to keep an extra layer of protection. While sunscreen is helpful, you can also try these options to optimize your skin health for the summer – and all year long.
Exfoliate Like No Tomorrow
Every day, our skin sheds about a million dead skins. Letting those skin stack up on the epidermis may clog up your pores. Therefore, I believe exfoliating the skin is important to maintaining its health and integrity. Exfoliation may also be the perfect solution to remove some of the damaged and dead cells. Just make sure to keep a routine to exfoliate once or twice per week.
Water is Your Best Friend
When it’s hot outside, we lose much of our fluids from perspiration. Not only does it damages the organs of our body. When our body losses fluids, it will begin to take moisture from our skin and hair. Which leaves them dull, tight and dry. Drink at least 8 cups of water everyday or whenever you feel thirsty.
Avoid the Tanning Beds
We all know that overusing tanning beds can lead to skin damage and possibly skin cancer. It can also severely damage the skin and gives you an unnatural complexion if done incorrectly. Skip the tanning beds and try to get a beautiful tan through self-tanning towels and lotion. Try to tan underneath some shades instead of laying directly at the sun. You can get the perfect shade and still tan safely.
Feel Fresh by Applying Toner
A good facial cleansing routine should always be complimented with a good toner. During warm weather months, a skin toner can come in handy to combat breakouts caused from sweat, oil, and and dirt clogging our pores. By tightening the pores, it removes all of them swiftly. I experience dry skin often and toners are the perfect option to quickly rejuvenate the skin and cleanse the pores. After applying to my face, I can feel the freshness and coolness.
Enjoy the Summer Festivities but Don’t Skip On Sleep
If you ever heard of the term “beauty sleep,” it’s no secret that sleep can keep the skin integrity intact. When you are sleep deprived, the body releases a stress hormone that slows the production of collagen in the skin. When our skin lacks collagen, the elasticity degrades over time which makes our skin look dull and worn out. Remember to always catch some beauty sleep every night by setting up a routine to snuggle into bed at the same time every day.
